What the standard defines
A colour temperature in kelvins locates a light’s emission against the colour a theoretical black body radiates when heated to that temperature — the reference the CIE defines. It is a colour, expressed as a temperature by convention, and it has nothing to do with how hot a lamp gets.
A colour rendering index compares how a set of reference colours appear under the light against how they appear under a reference illuminant of the same temperature. The scale runs to 100, and the figure is published by the maker.
What it does not promise
No quantity. Kelvin is colour. Output is lux at a stated distance, or lumens, and one product here publishes each. A listing giving a temperature alone has said nothing about how much light arrives.
No consistency across output. A dimmable light can shift colour as it is dimmed. Where a maker publishes a figure at full output only, that is the condition the figure describes.
No agreement between indices. Several rendering indices exist, measured against different colour sets. A number on its own is not comparable with a number measured another way, and the listings here name the figure without naming the method.
No match between two units. Two lights that both state 5600 K can still differ visibly. Bi-colour panels state a range — 3200 K to 5600 K on one product here — and a range is a pair of endpoints, not a promise about every point between.
What it works with
Continuous LED panels, ring lights and studio flash heads alike; a flash publishes a temperature the same way a lamp does. The other numbers on these boxes — a guide number or an energy in watt-seconds — describe quantity, and neither of them describes colour.
What people ask before they commit
Is a higher kelvin figure a brighter light?
No. Kelvin describes the colour of the emission, not its quantity: 3200 K is warm, 5600 K approximates midday daylight, 6500 K is cooler still. A dim 6500 K panel and a powerful 3200 K one differ in colour and in output independently, and quantity is published — where it is published at all — as lux at a distance or as lumens.
What does a rendering index actually add?
It describes how faithfully colours appear under the light compared with a reference of the same colour temperature. Two panels can both state 5600 K and render a red jumper differently. Four listings here state an index; the ones that state a temperature alone are describing the colour of the light and nothing about fidelity under it.
