The subject of this site, and how it is funded
PhotoVerdict is an independent editorial site about the equipment used to make a photograph or a piece of video and to carry it — mirrorless bodies and DSLRs, compact, action and instant cameras, camcorders, webcams, camera drones and gimbal stabilisers, standard, telephoto, wide-angle, prime and macro lenses, studio flash and on-camera flash, LED panels and ring lights, softboxes, light tents and backdrops, tripods, monopods and sliders, field monitors, teleprompters, photo printers and film scanners — and the heads, plates, cages, stands, reflectors, triggers, adapters, teleconverters, filters, hoods, caps, cleaning kits, straps, bags, cases, rain covers, batteries, grips, remote releases and grey cards that go with them. It does not cover surveillance or trail cameras, video doorbells, inspection or thermal cameras, projectors and their screens, microphones and audio interfaces, desk monitor arms, card readers, or memory cards themselves, all of which are covered elsewhere; nor darkroom chemistry; nor broadcast and cinema equipment sold by quotation. Focal lengths, sensor formats, maximum apertures, filter diameters, mounts and flange distances, thread sizes, guide numbers, energies in watt-seconds, stabilisation ratings in stops, colour temperatures and rendering indices, ingress ratings, stated shot counts, capacities in watt-hours, dimensions and declared load figures published by manufacturers are reported as such, with their unit written as published, with their source named, and never derived by us. In particular, an equivalent focal length is reported as the calculation it is, with the sensor format it was calculated for, and never printed in place of the figure engraved on the lens. Nothing here replaces a manufacturer's own instructions, nor the rules of the country you are in, which govern in particular where an unmanned aircraft may be flown and at what take-off weight, and how lithium cells may be carried aboard an aircraft — and two statements are repeated on every page that touches them: a declared maximum load on a tripod, a head or a plate is a static figure and is never presented here as a guarantee of stability in wind or at the moment of release, the lowest rating among legs, head and plate being the one that governs; and a stabilisation figure quoted in stops is a laboratory result obtained under a named protocol, never a promise about handheld work.
