The best light stands for 2026

A stand is chosen on four numbers the maker prints and one fitting that decides everything else. The numbers are maximum height, minimum height, folded length and declared load — and the folded length is the one people regret, because it decides whether the stand travels in a case or under an arm. More sections fold shorter and rise the same, at the cost of a thinner bottom tube and more clamps to check. The fitting is the spigot at the top: the 16 mm stud is the studio convention and the 5/8-inch designation names the same thing, while smaller stands finish in a 1/4-20 or 3/8-16 thread that suits a small flash and nothing heavier. The footprint matters as soon as anything wide goes on top, since a softbox turns a stand into a sail; a wider spread and a lower centre of gravity are worth more than the load figure at that point, and a sandbag is worth more than either. Then the ordinary things: air cushioning that stops a section dropping on a hand, whether the legs are steel or aluminium, and whether the top section can be removed and used as a short stand on a table.
