Why is publishing two heights worth so much?
Because the hub above and its buying advice both say the same thing: a tripod reaching eye level only by extending its column is being measured at its least steady. This page separates the two stages — 160 cm from the legs, 185 cm from the crank — so the honest working height is visible. Every other page on this shelf publishes one number and leaves the buyer to guess which configuration it describes.
What does a crank add over a plain column?
Control and a little weight. A geared crank raises the centre column smoothly and holds it against the load without a clamp slipping, which is easier than pushing a tube up one-handed while holding a camera. It also adds mechanism at the top of the tripod, which is the least helpful place to add mass — and it is part of why this one weighs 1.4 kg.
