Panasonic LUMIX FZ80D Bridge review

A bridge camera with a fixed 60× zoom from 20 to 1200 mm equivalent, 4K video and an electronic viewfinder, sold by Amazon.com for about $498.

Zoom without lenses

The FZ80D’s fixed lens runs from a 20 mm-equivalent wide angle to 1200 mm-equivalent telephoto. Reaching that far with an interchangeable-lens camera would cost thousands of dollars in lenses.

A viewfinder that matters

At long focal lengths, holding a camera to the eye is steadier than holding it at arm’s length. The 2,360k-dot viewfinder also helps in bright sun, when a rear screen washes out.

The physics

A 1/2.3-inch sensor and an aperture of f/5.9 at the long end make this a daylight camera at full zoom. POWER O.I.S. helps keep long shots sharp.

The right model

An earlier version of this page pointed to the European FZ82D, sold at about $861 by a third party. This page now covers the US FZ80D, sold by Amazon.com at about $498.

What people ask before they commit

Is the FZ80D a mirrorless camera?

No. It is a bridge camera with a fixed zoom lens. We moved it from our mirrorless shelf to compact cameras for that reason.

What is the difference between FZ80D and FZ82D?

They are the same camera family. Panasonic sells the FZ80D in the US and the FZ82D in Europe. This is the US model, sold by Amazon.com.

What is Post Focus?

The camera records a burst at different focus distances, and you tap the area you want sharp after taking the picture.

The cheapest way to 1200 mm-equivalent reach, with a viewfinder. It is a daylight camera at full zoom, like every small-sensor superzoom.
